Small Animal Surgery will require no introduction to general practitioners and specialists alike. This new edition replaces the 3rd edition which was released in 2007. The textbook has always been a favourite of practitioners with an interest in small animal surgery as its colour photography and surgical technique descriptions made it an easily accessible reference guide. The new edition retains this colour format whilst aiming to update the reader on areas of advancement within the field of veterinary surgery. The text, once purchased, can also be read and searched electronically. Additional electronic features include video clips of some procedures, aftercare instructions (downloadable as a PDF) and an application to aid with fracture planning. The text is a US authored book and overall the book translates well to Europe, although there continues to be some product information which may not extrapolate directly to the European reader.

The text is spilt into four sections overall; general surgical principles and then soft tissue. Orthopaedic and neurological procedures. These latter three sections are subdivided by either body system (e.g. surgery of the large intestine), anatomical region (e.g. surgery of the thoracolumbar spine) or of a particular structure (e.g. management of muscle and tendon injury or disease). The initial 15 chapters would be very useful for practitioners studying for the RCVS certificate in advanced veterinary practice as they provide a good overview of topics such as antibiotic therapy and nutritional management of the surgical patient. Following the general surgical principles section, each of the clinical chapters follows a set format. The initial sections provide an overview of the pre‐operative and anaesthesia concerns for that body system followed by a short section on surgical anatomy. Surgical procedures (e.g. total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy) are then outlined followed by discussion of specific disease processes (e.g. otitis externa) and their clinical presentation, differential diagnoses etc. The book continues to be well illustrated with good quality colour photographs and diagrams.

A new feature of the text is the use of an ‘advanced procedure’ logo to warn readers that a particular procedure is technically challenging. This does serve to address some of the concerns that previous editions did not give any indication to readers as to the skill set needed to perform a specific surgical technique (although it is somewhat subjective as to how procedures are graded). Whilst this does not necessarily have an impact on more experienced surgeons using the text, it will provide an easy visual clue for less confident practitioners that they may wish to consider referral for certain procedures. One criticism would be that the text still lacks very detailed information regarding post‐operative complication rates and management of these potential issues. Understanding and communicating such information is a vital part of performing any surgical procedure and practitioners may need to consult other surgical texts to obtain a more in‐depth picture.

There are a number of new chapters in this edition, for example a chapter covering such as the fundamentals of physical rehabilitation which provides an excellent overview of advances in physiotherapy and hydrotherapy and is a very welcome addition to this text. There are also new chapters on the principles of minimally invasive surgery and advanced imaging for surgeons, although the direct relevance of some of this information (such as positron emission tomography) could be questioned. Other chapters are updated where required including information on the use of alcohol‐based hand scrubs, topical agents for advancing wound healing and the use of surgical staplers in enterectomies. For example, I found the addition of the section on landmarks for local anaesthetic nerve blocks to be particularly useful.

Overall the fourth edition of Small Animal Surgery continues to be an excellent, well‐illustrated, reference guide to surgeons, newer graduates and undergraduate students. The updated and easy‐to‐read edition does bring this text up‐to‐date although readers may still need to consult more than one text when planning for more complex cases.
